New Year?s Eve. We all enjoy welcoming the New Year in with a bang, but more often than not it turns into night you?d rather forget, or one you just wish you could remember. According to the Department of Health each month at least 550 girls are admitted to hospital because of alcohol related issues, and A&E experiences a massive increase in causalities in the 24 hours surrounding NYE. With this in mind Lifestyle has some recommendations on how you can make New Year?s Eve one to remember for the right reasons, not because you woke up in a hospital bed!
Eat, don?t cheat!
Doing NYE on an empty stomach is definitely the biggest mistake. Research shows that foods high in protein, such as meat, fish or cheese, and Carbohydrates, such as pasta or rice, are best for preparing your body and lining your stomach. Foods high in starch will slow the absorption of alcohol into the blood stream, and will give you enough energy to keep going to the small hours. So tuck into the nibbles, it?s good for you.
Measure up and do the math
It?s easy to make yourself stronger drinks than imagined; the more you drink the more liberal with the liquor you tend to be. ?If you?re mixing your own, use a shot glass to measure out spirits. This makes it easier so to gauge how much you?ve already drunk; equating the amount of alcohol consumed to standard drinks rather than how much of the bottle has disappeared. If you?re out on the town opt for singles rather than triples, in Corp terms a double rather than a quad-vod! This way you can stay in on rounds, make fewer trips to the bar and keep a steady pace.
Alternate alcoholic drinks with water
Every time you finish an alcoholic drink, opt for a non-alcoholic one next time. This will keep you hydrated all night and be a real help in avoiding that New Year?s Day hangover, to which dehydration is usually the main cause. If you don?t want to attract attention then go for a Coke, fizzy water or any other soft drink that could be mistaken for a mixer.
Know what you?re drinking, avoid mixing
Whilst a Blow Job or Slippery Nipple may have seemed like an excellent idea at the time it probably won?t seem as funny the next day, as shots like these mix various spirits (Baileys, amaretto plus whipped cream if you were wondering)and so cause a killer hangover. Avoid things that contain mystery ingredients and try to stick to the same spirit, and not stray onto others drinks like wine. Mixing drinks in general is another common hangover contributor and can easily be done on NYE. Whilst one glass at midnight won?t do too much damage, be careful of Champagne, as it can be a secret killer. This is because the Carbon Dioxide in the bubbles increases the absorption of alcohol in the stomach and the intestines.
