Afghan police officer drugs, kills 17 colleagues

KABUL (Reuters) - An Afghan police officer drugged 17 colleagues and shot them dead on Wednesday with the aid of the Taliban, police said, the latest in a series of so-called "insider" attacks involving Afghan security forces and the Taliban.

The attacks have undermined trust between coalition and Afghan forces who are under mounting pressure to contain the Taliban insurgency before most NATO combat troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

The killings, the worst in a string of similar attacks in recent months, occurred at a remote Afghan Local Police (ALP) outpost in the eastern province of Ghazni.

"An infiltrated local policeman first drugged all 17 of his comrades, and then called the Taliban and they together shot them all," the chief police detective for Ghazni, Mohammad Hassan, told Reuters.

Seven of the dead were new recruits still undergoing training, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message by spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

The rapidly growing ALP program is an American-designed initiative designed to recruit local men as security officers for their area.

The force has been beset by allegations of abuse and widespread corruption.

In September, Afghanistan suspended the training of new ALP recruits following a spate of insider attacks on foreign soldiers.

Yemen kidnappers free Swiss woman after Qatari mediation: agency

DOHA (Reuters) - A Swiss woman held hostage for nearly a year in Yemen has been freed by her kidnappers and flown to Doha following mediation by Qatar, the Qatari state news agency QNA reported late on Wednesday.

Armed tribesmen had kidnapped the teacher in the western Yemeni port city of Hudaida in March 2012 to press their government to free jailed relatives, a Yemeni Interior Ministry official told Reuters last year.

QNA said that an assistant to the Qatari foreign minister and the Swiss ambassador in Doha were at the airport to greet the woman, identified as Sylvia Abrahat, upon her arrival aboard a private plane from Yemen late on Wednesday.

"I thank the Qatari negotiating team, which had worked for months in silence, patience and wisdom until we reached this result," QNA quoted the Qatari official, Ali bin Fahd al-Hajeri, as saying, without giving further details.

Kidnappings of foreigners and Yemenis are common in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula state. Many are often freed unharmed.

A Finnish couple and an Austrian man are currently being held by suspected Islamist militants, having been sold by armed tribesmen who had kidnapped them in December last year, according to a senior Yemeni official.

The Austrian hostage had appeared in a video posted on YouTube earlier this month, saying he would be killed if ransom money was not paid to a Yemeni tribe within a week.

Pictured with what appeared to be an AK-47 assault rifle pointed at his head, Dominik Neubauer had said in a video posted on February 21 he would be killed if a Yemeni tribe did not get ransom money within a week.

His family responded on Wednesday with its own appeal in a YouTube video for his release as his hostage takers' deadline for a ransom payment neared.

Yemen last month suspended a military operation against al Qaeda-linked militants in al-Manaseh while tribal leaders tried to secure the release of the three hostages.

Obama warns of risks over budget cut uncertainty

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Monday said looming automatic spending cuts are already affecting the economy, while a top administration official warned that the nation's borders would be less secure if billions of dollars are yanked from the budget Friday.

"The uncertainty is already having an effect," Obama said. "Companies are preparing layoff notices. Families are preparing to cut back on expenses. The longer these cuts are in place, the bigger the impact will become."

Despite the urgent rhetoric, there was no indication the White House and congressional Republicans were actively negotiating a deal to avoid the so-called sequester ahead of the end of the week deadline. The last known conversation between Obama and GOP leaders was last week and there have been no in-person meetings between the parties this year.

With Congress back from a weeklong recess, House Speaker John Boehner showed little willingness to move off his long-held position that the sequester be offset through targeted spending cuts, not the package of cuts and tax increases Obama supports.

"Mr. President, you got your tax increase," Boehner said, referring to the tax rate increases that took effect on Jan. 1. "It's time to cut spending here in Washington."

The $85 billion budget-cutting mechanism could affect everything from commercial flights to classrooms to meat inspections. Domestic and defense spending alike would be trimmed, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of government workers and contractors.

The White House continued laying out in stark terms what the cuts would mean for government services, dispatching Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to warn of the implications for critical security functions.

"I don't think we can maintain the same level of security at all places around the country with sequester as without sequester," said Napolitano, adding that the impact would be "'like a rolling ball. It will keep growing."

Napolitano focused in particular on the impact to the border, saying her agency would be forced to furlough 5,000 patrol agents. She tamped down the notion that budget cuts would make the nation more vulnerable to terrorism, but said the sequester would make it "awfully, awfully tough" to minimize that risk.

Also Monday, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said visiting hours would be cut at all 398 national parks, just as they prepare for an influx of spring and summer visitors.

Elsewhere in the government, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the cuts would harm the readiness of U.S. fighting forces. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said travelers could see delayed flights. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said 70,000 fewer children from low-income families would have access to Head Start programs. And furloughed meat inspectors could leave plants idled.

Obama will seek to build public support for his call to offset the sequester with a combination of targeted cuts and tax revenues Tuesday when he travels to Newport News, Va., a community that would be impacted by the defense cuts.

The sequester was designed as an unpalatable fallback, meant to take effect only if a congressional super-committee failed to come up with at least $1 trillion in savings from benefit programs.

Many of the nation's governors, who are gathered in Washington for their annual meeting, voiced frustration over the impending cuts, saying Washington's inability to strike a deal had created widespread uncertainty in the economy and hampered economic recovery in their states.

"The president needs to show leadership," said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican considered a potential 2016 presidential contender, following a meeting with Obama. "The reality is it can be done. This administration has an insatiable appetite for new revenue."

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a favorite of her party's conservative wing, pointed her anger at both Democrats and Republicans.

"No one should be playing golf. No one should be taking vacations," Haley said, taking a shot at Obama's recent golf outing and Congress' latest recess. "What they need to do is do what these governors do every day. We stay until we get it done."

Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy of Connecticut concurred.

"They need to get out of that box that sits under the dome and understand that this has real implications in people's lives," he said. "Work with the president, find a way to get it done ? or if you want, just turn it over to us governors, and we'll negotiate."

The governors, emerging from a closed-door meeting with Obama Monday, said the president had assured them the administration is pursuing solutions, but offered no assurances that officials would find a way ahead out ahead of the deadline.

My Husband Is Not Sexual - Her Busy Life

In a question to me on one of my webinars, Melanie writes: ?My husband is very loving, but not very sexual. I?ve tried to talk to him about this many times in non-threatening ways, but his lack of enthusiasm toward sex makes it very difficult to engage myself when he finally does get around to feeling sexual. We have zero intimacy mentally and very little physically.?
We often hear of men complaining that their wives are not sexual. It might surprise you that I often hear this complaint from women as well.

In my experience, there are a number of reasons why a man might not be sexual in his relationship:

He might have a very low testosterone level. This is something that can be tested and there is medication to raise testosterone level.

? He might have a fear of engulfment regarding sex. If he had an emotionally and/or sexually incestuous mother, he might be terrified of being smothered.

? He might be in resistance to being controlled by his wife. If his wife is critical or demanding, he may shut down sexually to avoid being controlled her.

? His wife might be needy and he might feel pulled on by her to make her feel good about herself. Just as a woman feels used when her husband uses sex addictively to feel good about himself, a man can also feel used when his wife uses sex to feel lovable.

? He might have learned to avoid both rejection and engulfment by being sexual on his own, using pornography as a safe way of being sexual without triggering his fears.

? His sexuality might be connected with emotional intimacy, and he might not feel emotionally intimate with his wife.

? There may be a control issue within the relationship regarding sex.

? Sex just might not be important to him.

? He might be impotent due to some of the above reasons.

Melanie states that her husband is very loving, but that they have zero intimacy. For both men and women in long-term relationships, sex can become boring when there is no emotional intimacy. The first thing I would do if I were to work with Melanie is to explore why there is no emotional intimacy, and if any of the above reasons could be contributing to the problem.

Melanie also states that when her husband is finally interested in sex, she has a hard time being involved. To me this indicates that there might be a subtle control issue going on between them: she wants sex when he is not available, but when he becomes available, she pulls away. Sometimes, having control over having sex is more important to one or both partners than actually having sex.

I would also question Melanie regarding whether she knew this before marrying her husband. People often do know these things about their partner, but convince themselves that either it?s okay with them, or that they can change it. I always encourage people to fully accept how things are before marriage, as there is never any guarantee that things will change. One thing is for sure: we cannot change anyone. People can change if they want to, but we cannot make them change. If someone is not very sexual before marriage, it is unlikely that this is going to change.

Given this fact, I would explore with Melanie what she knew before marriage. Since we attract a partner from our common level of woundedness, there may be a part of Melanie that is okay with a lack of sexuality, but she might be taking her husband?s lack of sexuality personally, which may be why she is having a problem with it.

Sexuality is sometimes a barometer of what is happening in the rest of the relationship, and since there is no emotional intimacy between Melanie and her husband, this is likely at least one cause of their sexual issues.

Whatever the reason, there is always much to learn if both people are open to learning.

Hill-Murray football coach Mauer arrested in Fridley prostitution sting

?

Hill-Murray High School football coach Mark Mauer was arrested Tuesday evening by Fridley police during a prostitution sting.

Mauer, 54, of Woodbury, was one of 19 men and four women arrested in a two-day sting at the LivINN Hotel on Central Avenue NE., officials said. The women are charged with prostitution and the men with soliciting.

The suspects, none of whom live in Fridley, were booked Friday at the Anoka County jail.

Mauer, a member of a St. Paul clan well-known for its athletic success ? Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer is his cousin ? was named coach at Hill-Murray last year and served as a major-gifts officer at the Catholic school in Maplewood.

According to the police report, Mauer arrived at the hotel Tuesday evening after making a date on the phone with an undercover officer, in response to an escort ad placed on an adult website. He agreed to pay her $100 for sexual intercourse, then left the room to get the money and was arrested.

Mauer told police that he was just ?messing around,? that it was ?stupid? to have gone there and that he had not intended to return when he left the room. Police said he was carrying Viagra pills.

In Mauer?s first season last year at Hill-Murray, he coached the Pioneers to an 8-3 record and the state tournament, where they lost a Class 4A quarterfinal to Holy Family.

He was head coach at Concordia University in St. Paul from 2004 to 2010 and compiled 40 victories, the most in the school?s history. Under Mauer, the team won its conference championship in 2005 and made two minor bowl appearances.

For a very brief time, Mauer was a St. Paul City Council member. After working as an aide to Council Member Dino Guerin, a childhood friend, Mauer was named to the council in 1997 when Guerin resigned to join the Ramsey County Board. But he canceled plans to run for the seat when, only a month later, he was offered a job as an assistant coach at North Dakota State University.

Mauer was a star quarterback at Harding High School in St. Paul and played football and baseball at the University of Nebraska. He has also worked as an assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin and New Mexico State University.

This is the third time in recent years that a Hill-Murray employee has been accused of illegal sexual conduct. In 2010, former school president Joseph Peschges pleaded guilty to indecent conduct in connection with a police sting in a St. Paul park. Matthew Ricker, a former assistant boys basketball coach at Hill-Murray, pleaded guilty in 2007 to harassment for sending explicit messages to three players.

Susanna Bair: Your Life Is Great! 5 Steps to Celebrating Instead of Complaining

The attitude of celebrating your life is healthy, both physically and emotionally. Not only that, but upbeat people attract other upbeat people, so by changing your attitude, you can set in motion positive reinforcement for a new and improved outlook. How great is your life already? Ask your heart. Your mind will tell you what you lack, which in turn will make you miserable. Your heart, however, will say, "Everything is perfect, just as it is. Let's celebrate!" To access this heart-driven attitude, become aware of how much there is to appreciate, right now. These five steps will help:

1. Appreciate your friends.
Your friends are the dancing arms of your heart. Relationships are everywhere, and chances are that you have friends in your life. Consider the qualities you appreciate in your friends and take a moment to savor their gifts in your life. Since these individuals are connected with you, they may share your attributes. Take a moment to appreciate your own qualities too. Through acknowledging and celebrating your friends, you take the first step in knowing how fortunate you are.

2. Party frequently.
We typically throw parties for birthdays, weddings, housewarmings, graduations, and job promotions. How much farther can you go in appreciating the favorable circumstances of your life? Consider throwing a party in celebration of your body parts that still work well, or having a toast in honor of cleaning your house. Take nothing for granted, give yourself permission to get silly, and indulge the celebration mindset.

3. Honor your metamorphosis.
The first two steps are the easy ones; everyone can learn to appreciate the fun stuff. To go farther in recognizing the greatness of your life, you need to dig a little deeper -- into areas you might not have considered. Take a moment to honor that which has made you great, even if it involved painful challenges, like a difficult childhood. Struggling through difficulties can be a fast track to developing resilience and compassion. Acknowledge and celebrate whatever qualities you have cultivated through your struggles.

4. Rejoice in your growing pains.
Look at the unfavorable circumstances of your life as being the seeds of your future greatness. How wonderful that your life has provided stimulus for more growth! Without this stimulus, you might simply plateau. Imagine how great you will be once you have resolved your current challenges and see yourself in training for that greatness -- like an Olympic champion. Practice gratitude for the demands of your metaphysical workout.

5. Celebrate your shortcomings.
When you can celebrate your faults and failures, you truly have embraced your great life. See your faults as reflections of your archetype. Highly-intelligent people, for example, may be absentminded, socially-awkward, and fashion-impaired. Their shortcomings simply verify their strength and focus. Perhaps you are a king or queen archetype. If so, you may have shortcomings like being a control freak or stubborn. Regardless, majesty is a great quality. If you have the faults of a queen or king, you just might have their greatness too.

So go ahead: Whoever you are, whatever you have endured, and wherever you are heading, take a moment to savor your life and bask in how great it all truly is. If you appreciate your friends, party frequently, honor your metamorphosis, rejoice in your growing pains and celebrate your shortcomings, you will have entered the space of the invincible heart.

New England braces for third snowstorm in three weekends

BOSTON (Reuters) - New England braced for its third snowstorm in three weekends on Saturday, putting crews to work sanding roads and trimming trees ahead of the snow, sleet and freezing rain moving in from the Midwest.

The storm blanketed states from Minnesota to Ohio earlier this week, dumping more than a foot of snow in Kansas on Thursday, forcing airports to cancel hundreds of flights and leaving motorists stranded on highways.

The storm was expected to pelt New England's coastal areas from northern Connecticut to southern Maine with a mix of snow and rain starting late on Friday, National Weather Service meteorologist John Foley said.

A winter storm watch forecasting heavy, wet snow was posted for Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening in southern New Hampshire, northern Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts, including the Boston metropolitan area.

"I'm not thrilled that we've got more snow coming this weekend. I've had enough of winter," said John Bonnanzio, 54, group editor at Mutual Fund Investors Association outside of Boston.

The Weather Channel forecast that southern parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and northern and central Massachusetts could see snowfalls of 6 inches or more over the weekend. From 2 to 5 inches of snow may fall in Boston, and the storm will likely dump rains from New York City to Philadelphia, it said.

Up to a foot of snow was possible in parts of central Massachusetts, Foley said.

The heaviest fall was expected Saturday night through Sunday morning, with 1 to 2 inches per hour possible, the weather service said.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino met with his "Snow Team" on Friday, as city crews prepared to trim trees to reduce the risk for downed power lines and pre-treat roads.

"Boston will be ready for its third consecutive weekend storm," Menino said in a statement. "Use common sense and stay off the roads while snowfall is heaviest tomorrow."

For some Boston-area residents the prospect of yet another weekend snowstorm was good news.

"I'm excited. ... I went out skiing in the streets during the last one, and I'll do the same thing again," said Jesse Beecher, 29, who works for a film production company.

The storm barreled eastward for the weekend after hitting the Midwest during the work week. In Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James said that about 60 buses were stuck on snowbound streets on Friday, and even tow trucks were immobilized.

"It's still an ongoing process to get people off the roads," he told CNN.

About 570 flights were canceled on Friday, with 127 of them at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Kansas City International Airport reopened after being closed on Thursday while crews cleared runways.

The National Weather Service said the storm may bring sleet and freezing rain to the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic states, with thunderstorms expected on the storm's southern fringe in the southeastern United States.

SNOWY KANSAS

Kansas bore the brunt of the bad weather on Thursday, with up to 15 inches of snow in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

A closed 200-mile (323-km) stretch of Interstate 70 in central Kansas was strewn with cars stuck in snow.

National Guard troops riding in Humvees were dispatched to look for stranded motorists along the interstate and other highways, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for Kansas emergency management services.

The storm triggered severe thunderstorms from eastern Texas to Georgia.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback declared states of emergency because of hazardous travel and possible power outages. Brownback ordered state offices closed.

In Nebraska, a 19-year-old woman was killed in a two-car accident on Wednesday on Interstate 80 near Giltner. The Nebraska State Patrol said weather was a factor.

An 18-year-old man died in Oklahoma when his vehicle slid into a tractor-trailer on a slushy state highway, the state's highway patrol said.

Drought-stricken farmers in the Great Plains, one of the world's largest wheat-growing areas, welcomed the moisture brought by the storm, although experts said more rain or snow would be needed to ensure healthy crops.

Obama to argue for gay marriage in Supreme Court case

The Obama administration has taken another important step in its advocacy of same-sex marriage, weighing in on an important case to be heard in the US Supreme Court next month.

The essence of the administration?s argument is that the 1996 ?Defense of Marriage Act? violates the US Constitution in defining marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman ? specifically Section 3 of DOMA, which bars recognition of same-sex marriages in the granting of federal benefits including Social Security survivors? benefits, immigration, insurance benefits for government employees, and filing joint tax returns.

In the Justice Department brief filed with the Supreme Court Friday, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli writes that DOMA?s Section 3 ?targets the many gay and lesbian people legally married under state law for a harsh form of discrimination that bears no relation to their ability to contribute to society.?

How much do you know about the US Constitution? A quiz.

?It is abundantly clear that this discrimination does not substantially advance an interest in protecting marriage, or any other important interest,? Mr. Verrilli writes. ?The statute simply cannot be reconciled with the Fifth Amendment?s guarantee of equal protection. The Constitution therefore requires that Section 3 be invalidated.?

The administration made it clear during the latter half of Mr. Obama?s first term that it would not continue to defend DOMA in the court cases where it?s been challenged. Taking up DOMA?s defense has been the ?Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group? in the US House of Representatives, directed by Speaker John Boehner to take the place of the Justice Department in arguing court cases on behalf of the controversial law.

The House brief filed last month asserts that the same-sex marriage issue should be left to the democratic process and that gays are quite capable of pursuing their rights in those venues, according to a Politico analysis.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

?Gays and lesbians are one of the most influential, best-connected, best-funded, and best-organized interest groups in modern politics, and have attained more legislative victories, political power, and popular favor in less time than virtually any other group in American history,? the House brief says.

Homosexual conduct has a history of being prosecuted as criminal in the United States. And although same-sex marriages now are legally recognized in nine states and the District of Columbia, many more states still have laws aimed at gays and lesbians ? including restrictions on the adoption of children, banning gay marriage, and refusing legal benefits to same-sex couples.

?Tradition, no matter how long established, cannot by itself justify a discriminatory law under equal protection principles,? the Solicitor General writes in his brief.

The Supreme Court next month also is scheduled to take up California?s Proposition 8, which provides that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized? in the state. Both Prop. 8 and DOMA have been declared unconstitutional by lower courts.

It?s unclear whether the Obama administration will weigh in against Prop. 8 as it has with DOMA.

?Next week I think we will see the government urging the same standard of review be used to overturn Prop. 8, and with it, all anti-gay-marriage laws,? Richard Socarides, a gay rights advocate and White House adviser to President Bill Clinton, told Politico. ?It?s clear from the administration?s DOMA brief that they understand and now embrace its connection to the Prop. 8 case. The discrimination evidenced by Prop. 8 itself is cited to support the standard of review urged by the government to strike down DOMA.?

The DOMA case involves Edith Windsor, who lived with her partner Thea Spyer for many years. They were married in 2007 in Canada, returning to their home in New York where their marriage was recognized by state law. But when Ms. Spyer died in 2009, Ms. Windsor ? because of DOMA ? was forced to pay $363,000 in federal estate taxes that the surviving spouse in a heterosexual marriage would not have to pay.

As he has said, President Obama?s position on gay marriage has ?evolved? in its favor.

In his inaugural address last month, he said, ?Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law ? for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

Polls show a clear shift in public acceptance of same-sex marriage, especially among under-30 Americans ? 63-35 percent approve, according to a Quinnipiac University poll in December. For all age groups, Gallup puts the number at 53-46 approval.

Journey to the limits of spacetime

Voracious absences at the center of galaxies, black holes shape the growth and death of the stars around them through their powerful gravitational pull and explosive ejections of energy.

"Over its lifetime, a black hole can release more energy than all the stars in a galaxy combined," said Roger Blandford, director of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Science. "Black holes have a major impact on the formation of galaxies and the environmental growth and evolution of those galaxies."

Gravitational forces grow so strong close to a black hole that even light cannot escape from within, hence the difficulty in observing them directly. Scientists infer facts about black holes by their influence on the astronomical objects around them: the orbit of stars and clumps of detectable energy.

With this information in hand, scientists create computer models to understand the data and to make predictions about the physics of distant regions of space. However, models are only as good as their assumptions.

"All tests of general relativity in the weak gravity field limit, like in our solar system, fall directly along the lines of what Einstein predicted," explained Jonathan McKinney, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Maryland at College Park. "But there is another regime?which has yet to be tested, and which is the hardest to test?that represents the strong gravitational field limit. And according to Einstein, gravity is strongest near black holes."

This makes black holes the ultimate experimental testing grounds for Einstein's theory of general relativity.

While black holes cannot be observed, they are typically accompanied by other objects with distinctive features that can be seen, including accretion disks, which are circling disks of superhot matter on our side of the black hole's "event horizon"; and relativistic jets, high-powered streams of ionized gases that shoot hundreds of thousands of light years across the sky.

In a paper published in Science in January 2013, McKinney, Tchekhovskoy and Blandford predicted the formation of accretion disks and relativistic jets that warp and bend more than previously thought, shaped both by the extreme gravity of the black hole and by powerful magnetic forces generated by its spin. Their highly detailed models of the black hole environment contribute new knowledge to the field.

For decades, a simplistic view of the accretion disks and polar jets reigned. It was widely believed that accretion disks sat like flat plates along the outer edges of black holes and that jets shot straight out perpendicularly. However, new 3D simulations performed on the powerful supercomputers of the National Science Foundation's Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) and NASA overturned this oversimplified view of jets and disks.

The simulations show that the jet is aligned with the black hole's spin near the black hole but that it gradually gets pushed by the disk material and becomes parallel to (but offset from) the disk's rotational axis at large distances. The interaction between the jet and disk leaves a warp in the accretion disk density.

"An important aspect that determines jet properties is the strength of the magnetic field threading the black hole," said Alexander Tchekhovskoy, a post-doctoral fellow at the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science. "While in previous works it was a free parameter, in our series of works the field is maximum: it is as strong as a black hole's gravity pull on the disk."

In the simulations, the twisting energy grows so strong that it actually powers the jet. In fact, the jet can reorient the accretion disk, rather than the other way around, as was thought previously.

"People had thought that the disk was the dominant aspect," McKinney said. "It was the dog and the jet was the wagging tail. But we found that the magnetic field builds up to become stronger than gravity, and then the jet becomes the dog and the disk becomes the wagging tail. Or, one can say the dog is chasing its own tail, because the disk and jet are quite balanced, with the disk following the jet ? it's the inverse situation to what people thought."

What does this have to do with Einstein and his theory of general relativity?

Astronomers are closer than ever to being able to see the details of the jets and accretion disks around black holes. In a September 2012 paper in Science, Sheperd Doeleman of MIT reported the first images of the jet-launching structure near the supermassive black hole, M87, at the center of a neighboring galaxy, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array composed of four telescopes at three geographical locations. It constituted a small sliver of a vast skyscape, yet the results give astronomers like McKinney, Tchekhovskoy and Blandford the hope that they will get their first comprehensive glimpse into the black hole's neighborhood in the next three to five years.

"We'll see the gases swirl around the black hole and other optical effects that will be signatures of a black holes in spacetime that one can look out for," said Blandford.

The observations will either match models like theirs, or they will be different. Both outcomes will tell researchers a lot.

"If you don't have an accurate model and anything can happen as far as you understand, then you're not going to be able to make any constraints and prove one way or another whether Einstein was right," McKinney explained. "But if you have an accurate model using Einstein's equations, and you observe a black hole that is very different from what you expected, then you can begin to say that he may be wrong."

The model Blandford and others generated using supercomputing simulations will help serve that comparative role. But they need to add one crucial element to make the simulations meaningful: a way of translating the physics of the black hole system into a visual signal as it would be seen from the vantage point of our telescopes, billions of light years away.

"We're in the process of making our simulations shine, so they can be compared with observations," McKinney said, "not only to test our ideas of how these disks and jets work, but ultimately to test general relativity."

The brainless origin of our head

Friday, February 22, 2013

In many animals, the brain is located in a specific structure, the head, together with sensory organs and often together with the mouth. However, there are even more distantly related animals, which have a nervous system, but no brain, like sea anemones and corals.

In this collaborative study between a research group led by Fabian Rentzsch (Sars Centre Bergen) and Ulrich Technau from the Dept. of Molecular Evolution and Development the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis was used to find out if one of the ends of the sea anemone corresponds to the head of higher animals. To do this they studied the function of genes that control head development in higher animals during the embryonic development of the starlet sea anemone.

"Despite looking completely different, it has become clear over the last decade, that all animals have a similar repertoire of genes, including those that are required to make the head of higher animals", says Ulrich Technau from the Dept. of Molecular Evolution and Development.

Stands on its head

When the sea anemones are in the larval stage they swim and search for a suitable site for settlement and metamorphosis into a polyp. During this metamorphosis, it is the front end of the larva, which senses the environment and attaches to the ground, while the other end, transforms into the oral side of the animal with mouth and tentacles.

In contrast to everyone's expectation, the researchers found that the differentiation of the aboral (anterior) front of the sea anemone larva is governed by a hierarchy of genes, controlled by the upstream master control gene Six3/6. Notably, this gene as well its downstream dependent genes, also play a crucial role in setting up the field for making the brain of flies, fish and men. Hence, the function of the "head genes" is located at the end that corresponds to the "foot" of the adult animals. "The anterior end of the swimming larva carries their main sense organ, so at this stage it looks more like this might be their head", says Rentzsch, the leader of the Norwegian research team. And indeed, the "head genes" function on this side of the animals, yet they are not (yet) used to form a full brain.

Sea anemones and all higher animals, including humans, share a common brainless ancestor, which lived between 600 and 700 million years ago. By revealing the function of "head genes" in Nematostella, the authors believe that they now understand better how and from where the head and brain of higher animals evolved. Definitely, the gene network that formed a sensory centre has been evolved in this common ancestor some 600 million years ago.

"Based on the appearance of the adult animals, the aboral end of these animals has traditionally been called the foot and the upper end the head, while in fact it is basically turned upside down", explains Technau. "Or we..." he adds with a smile.

BP tanker drivers at Grangemouth oil refinery start three-day strike over pay and pensions

FIRST of two planned walk-outs is set to hit aviation fuel and supplies of petrol to BP garages across Scotland.

BP TANKER drivers at the Grangemouth oil refinery have started a three-day strike over pensions and pay.

More than 40 drivers walked out at 4am today. The strike will last until 8am on Monday.

Supplies of fuel to BP petrol stations across Scotland and north-east England were expected to be hit by the stoppage. Aviation supplies will also be affected.

A second, four-day strike beginning next Thursday is planned.

The Unite union said 90 per cent of the 42 tanker drivers balloted had voted for strike action following the transfer of an aviation contract from BP to DHL.

The union said the drivers were set to lose ?1400 a year in pay and as much as ?100,000 from the value of their pensions as a result.

Grangemouth's owners Ineos said their operations would continue as normal during the strike.

A BP spokesman said: "Our priority remains the safe delivery of fuel products to all our customers.

"We have been working to, and continue to work to, minimise any potential disruption the industrial action planned for this weekend at Grangemouth could cause."

Around 20 drivers formed a picket line outside the refinery today.

Edinburgh Airport said they were aware of the strike action and were making plans.

NBA Rumors: Bulls Must Be Patient with Derrick Rose When He Returns

For nearly 10 months, the city of Chicago, Illinois has been impatiently waiting to here the words, "Derrick Rose is back." With reports floating around that Rose is getting closer, anticipation for such an event is at an all-time high.

Rather than becoming a prisoner of the moment, the Chicago Bulls must be patient when the time comes for Rose to return.

After his first 5-on-5 drills since tearing his ACL in April of 2012, Jon Greenberg of ESPN Chicago reported that Rose looked "really good." Those two words were all it took for Bulls fans to enter a frenzy.

Chris Broussard of ESPN?simply threw fuel on the fire.

Slow down, Bulls fans.

With this freshly imprinted in our minds, numerous fans and analysts were speculating when it could be that D-Rose actually returned.?

According to Nick Friedell of ESPN Chicago, Rose has taken the "next step."

"The big thing is you have to recognize the intensity of practice is different than the intensity of a game," [Chicago Bulls head coach Tom] Thibodeau said.?"So he's made the next step, he's got to do this for a while, there's no timetable, he's making good progress, he's right where he should be, we just want him to continue to concentrate on the rehab and when he's ready to go he'll go."?

And that's the bottom line.

Looking "ready to go" in a practice is far from the same thing as being able to play a game, whether regular season or otherwise. For that reason, it is imperative that Rose takes his time.

No matter how badly Bulls fans want to forget what happened the last time he didn't.

?

A Real 2012 Recap

When asked about Derrick Rose's 2011-12 NBA season, many people will jump to the end. They'll tell you where they were and what they were doing when Rose went down, grabbing at his knee during Game 1 of the Bulls' opening-round series.

What those people seem to forget is that there were injuries before the torn ACL.

Rose missed 27 regular-season games due to injury in 2011-12. It started in January, when Rose missed action due to what was described as "turf toe" (via the Chicago Tribune).

In February, Rose fell victim to muscular damage in his back (via the Chicago Tribune).

Come March, Rose was battling a groin injury that kept him out for 12 games before returning on April 8 against the New York Knicks (via the Chicago Tribune). It was then that Chicago learned an important truth.

They rushed him back.

Rose sat out the next game due to an injured right ankle (via ESPN Chicago). Rose again rushed his return and suffered an injured right foot (via ESPN Chicago).

That warrior's spirit that Bulls fans love about D-Rose ended up costing him 27 regular-season games?it may have also left his legs weak enough to suffer the infamous torn ACL.

?

Doing It Right

After attempting to prematurely return from injuries in 2011-12, Derrick Rose knows better in 2012-13. That's exactly why he stated that he "wouldn't mind missing" the remainder of the season (via Yahoo! Sports).

No matter how passionate he may be, Rose learned what can happen if you don't properly heal your body. Don't expect him to make the same mistake twice.

That's exactly why the Bulls, as an organization and fanbase, must display patience in these trying times. Even if Rose is to miss the remainder of the season, his long-term future is of far more important than just one year.

After all, we nearly saw his career wither away as his knee gave out from under him.

If Chicago wants to see their franchise flourish with Rose in a leadership position, patience is the only route to take. It's a frustrating and trying time, but the progress is more important than the process.

As long as Rose has the support of his fans and organization, his return will come when it's meant to be.

Travel & Leisure Blog's: The Advantages Of ... - hugoweaving

There are numerous fantastic reasons to employ a local charter flight. In a lot of scenarios charter flights are quicker and a lot more effective than their larger jet siblings.

Charter air travel vs. commercial air travel Regional charter trips hold up to 7 travelers every airplane. Charter airplane companies do not charge every passenger, instead they charge every flight and plane.

Charter Air travels Availability & Selection Trips that are booked with many regional charter flight business do not take care of blackout days or various other similar problems that are traditionally with commercial airline companies. Also throughout the hectic holiday season there are normally plane available. Passengers can additionally choose the type of general aviation airplanes they like.

Charter flight firms are available 24/7 and could provide quotes for your regional air charter flight. Your air travel may be set up and intended despite brief notice. When you call to set your timetable you will constantly talk with a representative that is experienced and able to intend even the smallest details of your trip.

Business & Leisure Tour Companies are big followers of personal air charter travel. For several executives and firms personal air travel suits their demand for rapid and reliable transport. While airplanes do fly at faster rates, general aircraft jets have the ability to steer clear of airplane lanes throughout flights and fly lesser making point-to-point trips a lot faster 70 percent of the moment. This is particularly true when flying within 250 miles of a location.

Tour Flexibility and Security The exclusive regional air charter may make additional sense compared to possessing a plane, for numerous reasons.

In addition, for companies which need to arrange more than one flight at a time, aircraft possession does not deliver. Aircraft security is the highest concern with the trusted charter business. All planes fulfill the ultimate safety requirements and trip staffs and pilots have considerable experience.

Plane security is the highest priority with respectable charter companies. All airplane satisfy the best security standards and air travel staffs and pilots have comprehensive encounter.

While jets do fly at faster speeds, general airplane planes are able to stay clear of jet streets during flights and fly lower making point-to-point air travels quicker 70 percent of the time.

Mayor Rob Ford wants Paul Magder to pay his $116Gs lawyer bill

TORONTO?-?

Mayor Rob Ford walked away from his conflict of interest case with more than $116,000 plus HST in legal costs and now he wants the man who took him to court to foot the bill.

The mayor won an appeal of the case threatening to throw him out of office last month. Ford was taken to court by Toronto resident Paul Magder, who was represented by high-profile lawyer Clayton Ruby.

Ford lawyer Alan Lenczner submitted the costs to the Divisional Court last week.

According to the factum obtained by the Toronto Sun Friday, Ford?s legal team logged around $107,070 worth of hours plus $8,974 in costs to prepare for the case, including photocopying, telephone charges and courier service.

Lenczner argues the costs requested are ?entirely reasonable? given the fact Ruby submitted a bill on behalf of Magder following the first trial for $125,850 for fees and $7,554.03 for disbursements plus HST.

He goes on to argue the court shouldn?t be concerned that Magder will have to indemnify his legal team because Ruby has made it clear he was working on the case ?pro bono.?

?Paul Magder understood even before the inception of his application that, if he was successful, his lawyers would receive costs from Ford which they would keep in their entirety,? Lenczner states.

?He also understood that, if he was unsuccessful, he would have to indemnify Rob Ford for his costs on a partial indemnity basis but not be required to pay his own lawyers.?

Do you think Paul Magder should foot Rob Ford's lawyer bill?

EU says eurozone economy to shrink again in 2013

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union predicted Friday that the economy of the 17 member countries that use the euro will shrink again in 2013 even though it will see its fortunes improve in the second half of the year.

In its winter forecast, the EU Commission, the EU's executive arm, said the eurozone is likely to shrink a further 0.3 percent this year, in contrast to November's prediction of 0.1 percent growth.

Across the eurozone, it said the debt crisis and the associated belt-tightening are weighing on activity ? official figures showed the eurozone contracted 0.6 percent in the final quarter of 2012 from the previous three-month period. The eurozone has been in recession ? officially defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth ? since the second quarter of 2012, when concerns about the future of the euro were particularly acute.

Many countries are in deep recessions, such as Greece and Spain, as they push spending cuts and tax increases to deal with their public finances. Others have suffered in the fallout, such as export powerhouse Germany, Europe's largest economy, which contracted by a quarterly rate of 0.6 percent in the final quarter of 2012.

Despite what it terms "headwinds," the Commission expects the eurozone recession to bottom out over the first half of 2013. By the fourth quarter, it forecast that the eurozone economy will be 0.7 percent bigger than the same period in 2012. In 2014, growth of 1.4 percent was penciled in.

"The decisive policy action undertaken recently is paving the way for a return to recovery," said Olli Rehn, the Commission's top economic official.

A number of recent economic indicators have pointed to an improving outlook, particularly in Germany. Much of the recent calm in financial markets with regard to the eurozone has been credited to the debt-reduction measures and a commitment by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro.

The wider economy of the 27-nation EU, which includes non-euro members such as Britain and Poland, is also bottoming out, according to the Commission. Here too, it lowered its 2013 growth forecast from 0.4 percent to 0.1 percent. And in 2014, it expects the world's largest economic bloc with 500 million people to grow 1.6 percent.

One of the key problems afflicting Europe is unemployment, and the Commission said an improvement was unlikely soon, with the jobless rate in the eurozone rate swelling to a record 12 percent.

While unemployment is high, the trend is not uniform: Germany has seen unemployment falling while Greece and Spain have seen their rates spike to around 26 percent. The Commission expects them to rise to around 27 percent.

The Commission forecast that Germany will grow 0.5 percent this year, but France, Europe's second-largest, will record only 0.1 percent growth. Italy and Spain are expected to decline 1 percent and 1.4 percent respectively.

Meager growth means some governments might have to tighten their belts further ? possibly in France, where the 2013 budget is predicated on a growth rate of 0.8 percent.

The Commission said France was likely to miss its target of getting its deficit below 3 percent of its annual gross domestic product. Instead, it predicted the deficit will rise from 3.7 percent this year to 3.9 percent next. And it forecast that France's debt burden will rise from 90 percent of GDP last year to 95 percent in 2014.

Rehn urged the French government to push ahead with measures to reduce its deficit and implement reforms to the labor market and to pensions. "France faces significant challenges," he said.

Tom Rogers, senior economic adviser at Ernst & Young, said he was encouraged with the message coming from the Commission.

"Reforms are already bearing fruit in a number of peripheral economies, and this should be an incentive for other governments to follow suit," said Rogers.

Rehn also urged Italy ? which holds national elections this weekend ? to continue tackling its debt and strengthening its competitiveness.

"With the elevated level of public debt, it is essential that the country stays on the reform course and maintains a consistent strategy of fiscal consolidation," he said.

Some countries, however, might be granted time by the Commission in the coming months to bring their finances under control.

Rehn said as long as member states "have a credible medium term strategy for fiscal consolidation," then "it can make sense to take into account weaker growth to have more time for the fiscal adjustment."

Chris Williamson, economist with London-based Markit, welcomed the likely flexibility.

"This will clearly help to ease some of the political and social tensions that are apparent in the peripheral countries of Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece," Williamson said.

Greece has faced the toughest hurdles and the Commission forecasts for the country show it's still got a struggle ahead.

The country is expected to shrink 4.4 percent this year ? Greece's sixth year in recession ? before posting growth of 0.6 percent in 2014.

One bright spot is that the Commission expects Greece to achieve a primary budget surplus ? whereby revenues are higher than spending excluding interest payments ? sometime this year. However, given the depth of its recession, Greece's debt burden will rise from 162 percent of annual GDP in 2012 to 175 percent this year and next.

It Is NOT Enough To Just Be In Love ? Simple Things Matter Blog

Love is not enough without friendship.

Best Friends

In our thousands of interviews with couples who have lived and worked on all of the world?s seven continents, we have heard the popular refrain over and over??I love my partner.?? ?I love my fianc?e.?? ?I love my spouse.?? I love, I love!? ??We admit it ? people who say they are in love, probably are!?? But is love enough to sustain the best relationships?

Is love enough to have a great marriage?? That is the most important question to ask yourself.

Here?s the rub ? being IN love is easy.? It expresses an emotion common to those relationships that have transcended the millennia.? Being in love is central to the best marriages ? to the best relationships between two people.? But being in love is NOT enough!

Here is what we know from our thousands of interviews with those who have had a successful and long-lasting relationship with another human being ? no relationship has ever passed the test of time without friendship.

One of the questions of our interview protocol is this ? ?Who is your best friend??? While we ask this question in every interview, there are two answers that stand out for us as to the importance of friendship in the best relationships.

We got our first most telling response in Rio de Janeiro.? After asking this question of the so-called ?Best Couple in Rio? we got answers that drove home this point to us.?? When we asked the most prominent physician in the magnificent city of Rio who his best friend was, he named TEN people and NONE was his wife of 37 years!

And it gets worse ? when we asked his wife who her best friend was, she gave ten names and, like him, the list of names did not include her husband, the prominent physician she had been married to for the same 37 years!

Here?s another good example of our point.? When we interviewed a couple in Sydney, Australia a few years ago, as usual, we asked the same question ? ?Who is your best friend??

To our surprise, both people in this so-called loving relationship, did not consider each other their best friend.? We probed and we probed, but alas, neither would admit that their spouse was their best friend.

The simple truth of the matter is this ? these two couples professed to ?love? each other, but they did not ?like? each other.? They were clearly not best friends. In fact, when we asked clarifying questions, it became quite clear that neither couple had friendship within their respective relationships.

Make no mistake about it ? loving someone is NOT enough.? If they are not your best friend, your relationship with them will not pass the test of time.? Your relationship with them can never be judged as a great success.

You see, the standard principle in the most successful relationships around the world is this ? your partner IS your best friend!? There is no equivocation when it comes to this point.? Best friends provide each other total trust, loyalty, mutual respect, admiration, encouragement, support, caring, and much more.

If the one you love is not your best friend, your relationship is in serious trouble and, in all likelihood, will not become one of the lifelong love stories we have heard around the world on all seven continents.

So, we will ask you what we have asked every couple we have interviewed across the continents ? is the one you purport to love really your best friend?? If they are not, you are not really in love for a lifetime .

In the best marriages and loving relationships, being best friends trumps everything else.? There are no if?s, and?s, or but?s about it.

Love well!? More importantly, like well!
