Looking beyond space and time to cope with quantum theory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Physicists have proposed an experiment that could force us to make a choice between extremes to describe the behaviour of the Universe.

The proposal comes from an international team of researchers from Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Singapore, and is published October 28 in Nature Physics. It is based on what the researchers call a 'hidden influence inequality'. This exposes how quantum predictions challenge our best understanding about the nature of space and time, Einstein's theory of relativity.

"We are interested in whether we can explain the funky phenomena we observe without sacrificing our sense of things happening smoothly in space and time," says Jean-Daniel Bancal, one of the researchers behind the new result, who carried out the research at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He is now at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore.

Excitingly, there is a real prospect of performing this test.

The implications of quantum theory have been troubling physicists since the theory was invented in the early 20th Century. The problem is that quantum theory predicts bizarre behaviour for particles -- such as two 'entangled' particles behaving as one even when far apart. This seems to violate our sense of cause and effect in space and time. Physicists call such behaviour 'nonlocal'.

It was Einstein who first drew attention to the worrying implications of what he termed the "spooky action at a distance" predicted by quantum mechanics. Measure one in a pair of entangled atoms to have its magnetic 'spin' pointing up, for example, and quantum physics says the other can immediately be found pointing in the opposite direction, wherever it is and even when one could not predict beforehand which particle would do what. Common sense tells us that any such coordinated behaviour must result from one of two arrangements. First, it could be arranged in advance. The second option is that it could be synchronised by some signal sent between the particles.

In the 1960s, John Bell came up with the first test to see whether entangled particles followed common sense. Specifically, a test of a 'Bell inequality' checks whether two particles' behaviour could have been based on prior arrangements. If measurements violate the inequality, pairs of particles are doing what quantum theory says: acting without any 'local hidden variables' directing their fate. Starting in the 1980s, experiments have found violations of Bell inequalities time and time again.

Quantum theory was the winner, it seemed. However, conventional tests of Bell inequalities can never completely kill hope of a common sense story involving signals that don't flout the principles of relativity. That's why the researchers set out to devise a new inequality that would probe the role of signals directly.

Experiments have already shown that if you want to invoke signals to explain things, the signals would have to be travelling faster than light -- more than 10,000 times the speed of light, in fact. To those who know that Einstein's relativity sets the speed of light as a universal speed limit, the idea of signals travelling 10,000 times as fast as light already sets alarm bells ringing. However, physicists have a getout: such signals might stay as 'hidden influences' -- useable for nothing, and thus not violating relativity. Only if the signals can be harnessed for faster-than-light communication do they openly contradict relativity.

The new hidden influence inequality shows that the get-out won't work when it comes to quantum predictions. To derive their inequality, which sets up a measurement of entanglement between four particles, the researchers considered what behaviours are possible for four particles that are connected by influences that stay hidden and that travel at some arbitrary finite speed.

Mathematically (and mind-bogglingly), these constraints define an 80-dimensional object. The testable hidden influence inequality is the boundary of the shadow this 80-dimensional shape casts in 44 dimensions. The researchers showed that quantum predictions can lie outside this boundary, which means they are going against one of the assumptions. Outside the boundary, either the influences can't stay hidden, or they must have infinite speed.

Experimental groups can already entangle four particles, so a test is feasible in the near future (though the precision of experiments will need to improve to make the difference measurable). Such a test will boil down to measuring a single number. In a Universe following the standard relativistic laws we are used to, 7 is the limit. If nature behaves as quantum physics predicts, the result can go up to 7.3.

So if the result is greater than 7 -- in other words, if the quantum nature of the world is confirmed -- what will it mean?

Here, there are two choices. On the one hand, there is the option to defy relativity and 'unhide' the influences, which means accepting faster-than-light communication. Relativity is a successful theory that researchers would not call into question lightly, so for many physicists this is seen as the most extreme possibility.

The remaining option is to accept that influences must be infinitely fast -- or that there exists some process that has an equivalent effect when viewed in our spacetime. The current test couldn't distinguish. Either way, it would mean that the Universe is fundamentally nonlocal, in the sense that every bit of the Universe can be connected to any other bit anywhere, instantly. That such connections are possible defies our everyday intuition and represents another extreme solution, but arguably preferable to faster-than-light communication.

"Our result gives weight to the idea that quantum correlations somehow arise from outside spacetime, in the sense that no story in space and time can describe them," says Nicolas Gisin, Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and member of the team.

The researchers that carried out the work, in addition to Dr Bancal and Prof Gisin, are Dr Stefano Pironio from the Free University of Bruxelles in Belgium, Professor Antonio Ac?n from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Dr Yeong-Cherng Liang from the University of Geneva, and Professor Valerio Scarani from the Centre for Quantum Technologies and the Department of Physics of the National University of Singapore.

UAE sends medics to Pakistan to evacuate girl shot by Taliban

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates has dispatched a medical team to evacuate a Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban if doctors decide she should be taken abroad for treatment, a UAE news agency reported on Sunday.

The WAM state news agency said the team would evaluate the condition of education campaigner Malala Yousufzai and facilitate her transfer to a hospital outside Pakistan.

Fourteen-year-old Yousufzai was leaving school in her hometown in the Swat Valley in northwest Pakistan when she was shot in the head and neck by the Taliban for speaking out against the militants and promoting education for girls.

A spokesman for the Pakistani embassy in the UAE told Reuters the UAE had sent an air ambulance to Pakistan, but a decision on whether she would be transferred out of the country had not been taken.

Yousufzai, whose shooting has drawn condemnation from world leaders, was being treated at a military hospital in Rawalpindi.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Said the attack must be "universally denounced."

"The attempt on Malala's life was not only an attack on a defenseless child, it was an attack on her and every girl's right to a future unlimited by prejudice and oppression," he said, according to WAM. "We must all stand with Malala in promoting tolerance and respect."

The shooting has outraged people in Pakistan, a country seemingly inured to extreme violence since a surge in Islamist militancy began after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Pro's And Con's Of Marriage & Divorce ? Choosing Between An ...

Choosing Between An Imperfect Marriage And A Flawed Divorce There is a saying ? The tragedy of marriage is that while all women marry thinking that their man will change, all men marry believing their wife will never change. The institution of marriage and divorce has both followers and challengers.? What is interesting to note is that at some point in your life, you can find yourself agreeing to both.? Then which is a better institution? This can be an unending debate wreaking havoc to our brains!

It is a subjective choice whether to continue with a marriage or embrace divorce. Although it is not easy for couples arrive at a conclusive outcome, the recent trend is indicative of divorce overpowering marital vows. Even in countries like India, where divorce is still considered a taboo (and is actually a sin in religious sentiment), the rising divorce rate indicates the changing beliefs of married couples.

We all know the advantages marriage and divorce bring along with. A better understanding can be had by reviewing how both these events can turn to our disadvantage. Beginning with divorce makes more sense now.

Imperfect?Marriage and a Flawed Divorce

Divorce has Many Flaws

Followers of this institution would agree to this ? By the time you learn the rules of life, you?re too old to play the game. Divorce can be your rescuer but can result into several nuisances, and the major ones include:

Ends the Marriage

Divorce can overpower your marriage vows and counter your decision to share life with a person (of your choice). Ending marriage means shutting door to your partner and packing away the sweet memories you have had all through your married days.

Choosing Between An Imperfect Marriage And A Flawed Divorce

Divorce not only changes your relationship with your spouse but can also mean changing your relationship with other people. There can be many who will not agree and support your decision and resist your involvement in their lives. After getting divorced, you tend to spend less time with married people/friends and more time with single people.

Costs Time and Money

Divorce may not come easily. There are several legal formalities which have to be accomplished before you get dissociated with your partner. Sometimes, getting divorced becomes demanding (especially if your partner does not agree with your decision); there can be extended legal procedures and taxing financial engagements.

Hurts Emotionally

It is not fun to have divorce. You may have to deal with sleepless nights and painful days before your life takes to the normal path. This is more evident if you have children around who may not attune to your thinking and blame you for the outcome. Besides, you can experience hurt within yourself even though the decision to get divorced had been matter of choice and not chance.

Children of divorced couples are more likely (than other children) to experience depression, low school performance and social problems. Divorce can create a crisis-like situation for children who inevitably get entangled in a couple?s fight. It is not out of the ordinary to expect a long-term threat to children?s ability to commit to relationships later in life. It can emerge as a lifetime of regret and unwanted feel of guilt.

But Marriage is not without Limitations as well

Truly, marriage is not a bed of roses. It can bring several nuisances into life. Popular ones are:

Constant Blow to Self-Esteem

If you have do not have a happy marriage, your partner shall (possibly) not leave any chance of blowing your self-esteem. It can be through words or through actions. Forget that you are living with the same person (who can put you to tears) everyday for the rest of your life! Forget that you cannot afford to be selfish or self-centered!

Sharing Everything

Though you may literally not be sharing everything with your partner, you know that what belonged to either of you now belongs to both of you (or even more people if you have smart in-laws).

Choosing Between An Imperfect Marriage And A Flawed Divorce

All the years, you might have been satisfied living your own way but now that can be history. Moreover, marriage is not only sharing financial agendas and bank accounts but also ideas and emotions.

Intimacy vs. Monotony

This one is a little debatable, although many would agree. The fact that you have to be ?close? to only one person throughout your life can take its toll. Some people may find it hard to digest that they can enjoy sexual intimacy with only their spouse.? Coupled with other sacrifices, sexual monotony can turn out to be a big disadvantage in marriage (which is actually a matter of opinion). The monotony owing to dealing with same person can sometimes be burdening, sometimes amounting to infidelity.

A Broad Perspective

Marriage and divorce have both rewards and penalties. It is said that there is a price for everything you want in life. Make your bargain carefully so that you end up gaining more than losing. Marriage benefits can often outweigh the limitations and this can be the possible explanation that despite divorce gaining popularity, people still prefer to marry. It seems a matter of personal assimilation and opinion.

Week in review: Real estate news was focused on new office projects

Craig Hall's 200,000-square-foot Frisco office building will open in early 2014. (Hall Financial Group)

Last week?s big news was about the industrial building market.

This week it?s the office market?s turn with two large Dallas-area projects in the works.

Crescent Real Estate and Craig Hall?s new office tower deals couldn?t be more different.

Crescent?s Uptown development is an urban mixed-use project that will be located on Dallas? busy McKinney Avenue just north of downtown.

Craig Hall?s planned building is up in Frisco on the Dallas North Tollway ? just a stone?s throw from the Stonebriar Center mall.

The building?s are almost 20 miles apart and are dramatically different architecture styles.

But they have something in common.

The 8-story Hall Office Park building and the 20-story Crescent project on McKinney are both located in two of the only locations in North Texas where such new developments are likely to succeed.

Both Uptown and the Frisco/West Plano markets have quickly filled up their office space coming out of the recession.

There?s only about a 14 percent office vacancy in Uptown, and the market is even tighter ? 8 percent empty ? in Frisco and West Plano.

With demand for office space picking up, developers in both areas will be scrambling to get new buildings delivered in time to make leases before tenants opt for nearby business districts that have more available office space.

Skydiver gets ready for today's bid to break sound barrier

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) ? The team working with an extreme athlete who hopes to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier is inflating the balloon that is designed to lift him to the stratosphere.

Felix Baumgartner has donned his high-tech pressurized suit and is on board a 3000-pound capsule that will be lifted by the balloon near Roswell, N.M.

The former Austrian paratrooper's jump was postponed twice last week because of high winds.

Mission control officials say the 30 million cubic foot balloon will be fully inflated by 10:00 a.m. MDT, when the three-hour ascent is expected to begin.

If successful, "Fearless Felix" will break a 52-year-old altitude record by Joe Kittinger, who jumped from 19.5 miles (31 kilometers) and reached a speed of 614 mph (988 kph), just under the sound barrier.

Softbank reportedly will purchase a 70 percent stake of Sprint

Following up on previous reports of talks between Japan's Softbank and Sprint, numerous reports are now suggesting that Softbank will take on a 70 percent stake in Sprint.

Although nothing official has been laid down by either company at this point, CNBC and Business Insider are both reporting the deal will officially be announced as of Monday.

When it comes to the terms of the agreement, it's been suggested the deal will cost Softbank $20 billion -- $8 billion in shares directly from Sprint, and a $12 billion offer to buy shares from the public.

Overall, the deal is interesting and should buy Sprint some time to roll out their LTE network on a grander scale though it remains unknown what, exactly the deal will mean in the long-term for either company.

Texas Rangers hunt Twitter trolls, taxpayers are not amused

11 hrs.

The Texas Rangers flash the baddest badge in the Lone Star State. They're the top cops working the biggest crimes beneath iconic white cowboy hats. They're the bodyguards for the governor.

All of which raises the question: Why are they investigating a Twitter prank poking fun at a small-town city council?

Since at least August, members of the state's 150-man elite police force are getting to the bottom of who's behind parody Twitter accounts lampooning council members in what's arguably the law-and-order headquarters of Texas: Huntsville, home to the nation's busiest execution chamber.

The mock tweeters include one councilman's?mustache?publishing zingers that include, "(Councilman) Keith (Olson) likes to abuse his powers like I like to abuse his face." Another from the handle Laughable Loll cracked, "I shined my head extra special for tonight so the camera would reflect off of it."

Not laughing is the local prosecutor. He says the tweets may run afoul of harassment laws and asked the Rangers to investigate. That's an absurd explanation to one of the tweeters, who called it a waste of taxpayer dollars, and to constitutional experts who say the tweets are a cut-and-dry case of First Amendment rights.

"When I think of the Texas Rangers, I think of people who are committing felonies," said Katie Newman, who says she admitted to creating one of the fake accounts while being interviewed by a Ranger. "It would strike me as odd that a Texas Ranger would be involved in a parody account of council members in little Huntsville, Texas."

A spokesman for the Texas Rangers, in a brief statement responding to questions about why it would look into such tweets, said only that the Rangers work with district attorneys who request assistance.

"The amount of time spent on this inquiry is a matter of hours so far," spokesman Tom Vinger wrote in an email.

It doesn't even warrant that much time, according to some law experts.

David Anderson, a law professor and First Amendment expert at the University of Texas at Austin, said neither prosecutors nor the Rangers have "any business" investigating tweets if the content is simply parody or satire. He said that even a tweet implying that a council member committed domestic abuse ? as one council member claims ? would be a libel matter taken up in a civil lawsuit, not in criminal court.

"It's ridiculous," Anderson said.

Few badges pack more lore than those of the Texas Rangers. They've followed the trail of Bonnie and Clyde, fought the Comanches when Texas still had its sovereignty and snuffed out smugglers during prohibition. Their Wild West legend has inspired characters from the masked "Lone Ranger" to Chuck Norris playing the karate-kicking "Walker, Texas Ranger."

Today, the Rangers have a lower profile as the state's lead criminal investigators. When polygamist leader Warren Jeffs built a massive compound for his followers in West Texas, the Rangers were the ones knocking on the doors in the middle of the night in a raid that produced widespread allegations of sexual abuse. A highly secretive "Ranger Recon" team patrols the border with the stated purpose of keeping drugs and cartel violence from Mexico at bay.

Walker County District Attorney David Weeks said asking the Rangers to investigate the tweets was appropriate.

"In looking at it, it's more the idea that you have someone totally uninvolved looking at an issue that may have political ramifications," Weeks said. "I try to err on the side of caution in those cases."

Twitter is swarming with the fake doppelgangers of celebrities and politicians. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel still has fewer followers than a well-known parody account that stopped tweeting a year ago, while Not Bill Walton exaggerates the eccentricities of the former basketball star to an audience of 125,000 followers. The tone of fake accounts range from gentle caricatures to the mean-spirited.

The mock accounts in Huntsville sprang up last year and most have only a few dozen followers. Newman, who unsuccessfully ran for a council seat last year, said a Ranger in August interviewed her for more than an hour at his office in Huntsville. She said the Ranger hinted at laws surrounding false impersonations but never cited any specific statute.

Newman said she felt kind of bullied into confessing to being behind one of the accounts.

"One of the things he said is, 'What if we have proof from a council member that you did their account?'" she said.

Newman said she hasn't heard from the Rangers since that meeting. She insisted she didn't know who is behind the other parodies.

"I personally think the Texas Rangers have bigger and better crimes to fight," she said.

OBAMA CAN COME BACK AFTER FIRST DEBATE DEBACLE, Says Democratic Strategist Robert Weiner in Washington Times Column

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?"President Obama can come back after the first debate debacle," says national Democratic strategist and former Clinton White House spokesman Robert Weiner in a Washington Times oped column just out.

Weiner states, "President Obama's inexplicable silence in the first debate has led to a large bump for Mitt Romney ? now slightly ahead according to the Pew poll -- and the game-changer Democrats were convinced would not happen. The Saturday Night Live parodies were predictable?Obama mute against Romney's assertions, Obama becoming the Eastwood empty chair. For all my love of the President, it was bad, really bad."

Weiner says that his wife and coincidentally happened to stay at the Westin Lake Las Vegas around Obama's three-night debate prep stay.? They were organizing an event in neighboring Las Vegas and wanted the away-from-it lake and mountain scenery the hotel offered, so they stayed there before and after their event.

"We could not resist asking hotel staffers what they thought of the President," Weiner says. "Very nice guy," said a hotel security staffer. Without prompting, the hotel staff member added, "We relaxed him too much."? Another hotel staffer, a bellman, said, again with no prompting, "We hope it wasn't the hotel's fault."? That's how obvious the poor performance was.

Weiner contends the performance may also have been attributable to the President's choice of debate stand-in. Weiner asserts, "If Obama wanted to learn how to win a debate, not just expound policy, he needed someone like James Carville or Paul Begala as his debate stand-in opponent, rather than Kerry, who is renowned for long, long sentences. The President learned too well. ?If he preferred to practice against an elected official, he could have gone against Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana, who wowed the last two Democratic conventions with punchy, pithy points."

Weiner says that "President Obama let Romney get away with everything.? He should have countered 'trickle down government' with 'Trickle-down economics hasn't worked since Hoover' (and should actually have used something like that first before Romney stole the 'trickle down' line and said 'government')."?

"When Romney compared the $5 Trillion tax cuts assertion to 'my five boys saying something that's not always true but just keep repeating it and ultimately hoping I'll believe it,' it was a perfect opening for the President to retort, 'But you have proposed a 20% across-the board tax cut.? You can't have a family, or America, headed by a magician who miraculously pulls a rabbit out of a hat -- money does not grow on the trees of rich tax cuts.? When you refuse to say where you will get the deductions and loopholes to pay for your cut, the American people recognize blue smoke and mirrors and want real answers, not a secret plan that can make them bankrupt.? Mitt, how much would you cut deductions for home mortgages, or charities, or health benefits that Americans need and which help our economy?and don't say 'tell you later'?'"

Likewise, says Weiner, "On Social Security, it was inexcusable for the President to say 'we think alike' instead of 'Republicans have been pressing for privatization for years.' As for the Medicare $716 billion cut, it was amazing the President did not point out that his cut was against insurance company overcharging and the money went to seniors' drug 'doughnut hole' coverage and adding years to Medicare's solvency, whereas the Republicans voted to cut actual benefits."

Weiner believes that "if Obama had a few good lines like that, it would have been an even performance, given that Romney was masterful on rhetoric."?

Weiner says that "With two more debates, Obama can and will come back? if he revamps his attack. Vice President Joe Biden's performance against GOP challenger Paul Ryan will not count anywhere near as much as Obama's own."

He concludes, "In 2000, Al Gore won the first debate by 15 points and lost the next two and the election (aside from Florida).? Now, the jobs picture is improving, bin Laden is dead, and Americans overwhelmingly support leaving Iraq and Afghanistan.? So President Obama and the Democrats still have some cards -- if they learn how to play them."

Awesome Interview With FakeGrimlock | Email Marketing Tips ...

If you grew up watching the Transformers cartoons then I don?t have to explain to you who?Grimlock?is. If not then all you need to know is that he?s a member of the Dinobots who when transformed, resembles one of those giant car eating dinosaur robots from a monster truck event. What does a humongous transforming dinosaur robot have to say about email marketing? Just about anything he damn well wants to.

FakeGrimlock is a ?GIANT ROBOT STARTUP DINOSAUR? and a?Twitter handle inspired by the original that talks in ?Tarzanian? English and pontificates in broken sentences on just about any topic. Since Twitter?s character limit doesn?t lend itself well to good English, FakeGrimlock fits in just fine and he?s amassed almost 10,000 followers on?Twitter.

?

The self-declared awesomeness of FakeGrimlock became apparent to me when we started chatting on Twitter and he assured me repeatedly that he had no intention of eating me ? in fact, I was honoured to be included with other humans on his ?No Eat Friday? list.

Call me crazy but, when I run into a refugee from a car crushing halftime show, how can I pass up interviewing him about email marketing? Oh, and when the giant robotic dino talks, people listen, because he?s been known to eat those who don?t pay attention.

?

Is it OK if I call you FG? I mean, I don?t want to be eaten for a dumb mistake! Here are a few questions for an interview on our blog.

CALL ME, GRIMLOCK, FG OK.

ME PROBABLY NOT EAT YOU.

NOW, ME DESTROY PUNY QUESTIONS. WITH ANSWERS!

?

What can email marketers do to be more awesome and get included in your book of awesome?

HOW MARKETERS BE MORE AWESOME? BE HONEST! TELL SOMEONE ELSE TRUTH ABOUT GREAT THING WITH PASSION IS GOOD FOR WORLD. TELL LIES ABOUT CRAP IS NOT.

HOW GET INCLUDED IN BOOK OF AWESOME? IMPOSSIBLE.?THAT BECAUSE IT COLLECTED WORK OF ME, GRIMLOCK, NOT YOU, MARKETERS. WRITE OWN BOOK.

?

What?s the biggest mistake companies make with email marketing?

WHAT BIGGEST MISTAKE COMPANIES MAKE WITH EMAIL MARKETING? THAT SIMPLE. WHEN ROI FOR PERSON READING IS NOTHING, YOU DOING IT WRONG. BE INTERESTING. BE USEFUL. BE HONEST. OR BE BORING, USELESS LIAR LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

?

What do you think of spam?

WHAT THINK OF SPAM? DELETE.

?

If we threatened to eat spammers would that do any good?

ME APPLAUD HORRIBLE, GRUESOME DEATH OF SPAMMERS.

?

Do you use email marketing?

ME, GRIMLOCK, ONLY SEND EMAIL WHEN KNOW PERSON, AND THEM ASK FOR KNOW ABOUT THING ME EMAILING ABOUT.

FOR INSTANCE, YOU SIGN UP TO KNOW ABOUT BOOK, ME SEND YOU EMAIL WHEN IT READY. NO SEND EMAILS ABOUT OTHER, NON-BOOK THINGS.

?

Your tweets are considered very creative and fun. Can brands be more fun on social media channels like Twitter and email or should they keep it serious?

ALL BRANDS SHOULD BE MORE FUN. BUT HAVE TO DISCUSS WITH LAWYERS FIRST. THAT PROBLEM WITH HAVE LOTS OF MONEY. THERE ALWAYS SOMEONE READY TO SUE IT FROM YOU.

?

Do you read your email mostly on a desktop, laptop or smartphone?

YES.

?

What makes you subscribe to an email list?

NOT KNOW, HAVE NEVER DONE IT.

?

If you could say one thing (and I know you?re good at saying only one thing) to email marketers, what would that be?

BE AWESOME FOR OTHERS. NOT FOR MAKE MONEY. DO FIRST, MONEY PART WORK OUT ON OWN.

THAT IT.

ASUS' TAICHI convertible laptop hits the FCC

ASUS Tai Chi convertible laptop hits the FCC

If 2012 was the year of the Ultrabook, 2013's going to be remembered by the massive proliferation of laptop / tablet hybrids. One such convertible that's just been given full marks by the FCC is ASUS' TAICHI, an 11.6 or 13.3-inch unit that's packing an Ivy Bridge Core i7, 4GB RAM and, most notably, a display on both sides of its lid. While there's no official word from the company on a launch date, now that the government has given a thumbs up, it can't be too much further out. Plausibly, a rogue Amazon listing has pegged the 11.6-inch model as costing $1,300 and arriving on October 26th, alongside Windows 8.

free up your employee recognition program: lessons from the ...

employee recognition

A great book came out a couple of years ago called Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead. For those who might be less familiar with ?The Dead? phenomenon: over 2,300 live performances from 1965 to 1995 established them as the most popular touring act in rock history?all without a single top 10 hit (until 1987?s ?Touch of Grey? reached number nine, driven by what had grown into an enormous concert-going fan base). The book is written by two dedicated (or rather ?Dead-icated?) dead-heads who happen to be in the center of some of the biggest changes in marketing in the past 40 years. Brian Halligan, CEO of HubSpot, has attended over 100 Grateful Dead shows, and David Meerman Scott, the author of The New Rules of Marketing and PR, has seen?he thinks?45 (or so) shows.

Why would HR practitioners benefit from reading a marketing book??Two reasons: First, many of the lessons are ?business? lessons as much as they are marketing lessons.?And the more conversant you are with business strategy and ideas, the more credibility you bring to the table with your company leadership.?Second, we?ve found that our HR clients who partner with their marketing counterparts experience greatly increased influence on their organization.?How??By bringing their brand to life inside the company.?To do that well, HR leaders need to have a feel for marketing key marketing principles.

Another reason: inside of these marketing lessons from the Grateful Dead are some potent HR lessons, especially with respect to employee recognition programs.?

For example, the music industry has tanked in recent years due to its stubborn need to control content. As Halligan and Scott write in their book, The Grateful Dead figured this out a long time ago;?they focused on concerts as their main source of revenue, and allowed fans to record live shows:

??they actually established ?taper sections? where fans? equipment could be set up for the best sound quality.?When nearly every other band said ?No,? the Grateful Dead created a huge network of people who traded tapes in pre-Internet days.?The broad exposure led to millions of new fans and sold tickets to the live shows.?

Consider the ever-present urge in the HR world to control, to regulate, to create rules. Aside from things like health care benefits or sexual harassment?where rules are critical?in what areas of HR might you be able to turn away from rigid controls to get better results?

Imagine overburdening an employee recognition program with a thicket of rules.?That?s the LAST thing you want with an employee recognition program because each of those rules creates a barrier to adoption and pretty soon, nobody is using the program.?Wise HR professionals ?get? this and go the other direction by minimizing rules for recognition programs ? and in doing so, foster programs that really get used.?We?re not talking about people in tie-dyed clothing? passing joints around?your drug testing policies will manage that. We?re talking about people at work passing around kudos and high fives about great work.?Surely, we don?t need a lot of restrictions around that.

Beyond trusting your people, why not reward your recognition program?s greatest ?fans???Recognize the top recognizers. The Grateful Dead created a way to always put die-hard fans in the front row:

??Unlike nearly every other band, the Grateful Dead controlled the ticket sales for their concerts.?The unique ticketing system?led to word-of-mouth marketing like this: ?Want some great tickets to the Grateful Dead concert? You can buy tickets directly from the band. I know their phone number!??For most gigs, blocks of tickets were also sold at the venue box office and through electronic ticketing systems.?But the best seats always went to the band?s biggest fans.?

employee recognition

And how do you keep fans coming back?

?The Grateful Dead played over 2,300 concerts, and each one was completely unique due to their improvisational style.??Unlike traditional improvisation, the band ?improvised individually and as a group ? at the same time.?Musically, this simultaneous improvisation was profound as it required band members to listen carefully to what each of the band members were doing musically and build on it ? while simultaneously carrying on their own improvisational riffs.??

This was a big reason fans felt compelled to see the band again and again, and to create (and trade) as many tape recordings of shows as possible.?Variety kept everything they did interesting.

Our research with managers confirms employee recognition programs need variety to keep your people using them.?One-size-fits-all programs get old fast, and over time start to feel stale and less genuine.?Make sure you have strategies in place to 1) notice day-to-day effort, 2) reward above-and-beyond results, and 3) celebrate career milestones.?And then make sure you have a wide variety of tactics and tools available to deliver those strategies.

Jerry Garcia and friends might sum this up by saying ?have a little faith in people, reward your fans, give them variety, and let the goodness fly.??The Grateful Dead taught us that beautiful things happen when you trust people and let them help define the experience.?Maybe that?s why they were so grateful.

There are lessons to learn from FIS, a Fortune 500 financial services company. This global organization has used recognition to unify its culture and thousands of employees around the world following a number of mergers and acquisitions. The company?s recognition program has paid off. Eighteen months after the launch, FIS experienced a 61 percent increase in recognition, 16 percent increase in overall engagement, and eight percent increase in trust. Find out why the FIS story is one of team-building, communication, and unification.

China Nobel winner Mo likely to steer clear of politics: translator

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's newest Nobel laureate, novelist Mo Yan, could use his new-found stature to make a subtle difference in the arena of freedom of speech in China, but he is more likely to keep his head down and avoid politics, his translator said on Friday.

The 57-year-old Chinese author, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday, has achieved his success by working within a system with distinct boundaries, not ignoring them, said Howard Goldblatt, who has translated several of Mo's works into English, including the acclaimed "Red Sorghum". The book was later the basis for a film directed by Zhang Yimou.

"I think Mo Yan could actually, in a very nuanced way, make a difference and get some of this stuff happening," Goldblatt said by telephone from Boulder, Colorado, referring to improving freedom of speech and conditions for writers.

"To be honest with you, I doubt that he will. I think he's just a novelist who doesn't want to be involved in those things."

"He wants to continue to write, and to continue to write the kinds of things he needs and wants to write he has to live within certain parameters."

Mo is the first Chinese national to win the prize, which comes with a financial reward of $1.2 million, and the decision was celebrated by state-controlled media in China and on popular Chinese microblogging sites.

Critics have said the decision was odd, and that Mo's works were not artistically original, emulating Latin American authors. Dissident artist Ai Weiwei said Mo carried the "taint of government".

Such comments were neither accurate nor fair, though, said Goldblatt, who noted that Mo started writing his trademark fantastical novels before reading Latin American works by authors including Gabriel Garcia-Marquez.

"If he's influenced by anything he's influenced by Chinese storyteller traditions, by the mindset and the concept of place by Faulkner," he said, referring to U.S. writer William Faulkner.

"NO PUSHOVER"

Mo is a Communist Party member who grew up in a small town and served in the military, which Goldblatt said colored his world view. But he was not very different, in that respect, to other authors in China.

"They are all party members, and they are all members of the (state-backed) writers union," Goldblatt said.

"You have to be. And all of these other writers are writing under the same strictures, they're writing in the same environment, they know the rules, they do essentially what he does."

Mo is not a pushover, though. He has not been afraid to push the literary limits and some of his works have been banned in China. His 1988 book "The Garlic Ballads", which Goldblatt later translated into English, depicts folly and brutality in Communist policy, which leads to tragedy.

Twelve years ago, when Chinese-born author Gao Xingjian was awarded the Nobel literature prize, Beijing attacked the exiled dissident writer and sharply criticized the Nobel award committee. Mo publicly defended Gao.

"He was one of a very, very small number of writers who came out and defended Gao Xingjian saying 'He's a good writer, he's Chinese, all of these things that you're saying are simply not true'."

"You know, he respects and likes the dissidents," said Goldblatt.

"He just doesn't want to become one of them in exile."

Proven Tips For Being Successful With Network Marketing

Many people want to use email marketing to improve their business, but do not have the knowledge to do it. There are a lot of different ways that marketing with email can build a business. A successful campaign will increase sales and build a good reputation for your business.

Check how your emails look on different computers and browsers. After you?ve deemed a particular design perfect, see how it looks in all major browsers, operating systems, and email clients. Different email readers may show the email very differently.

Ensure your content reads as if it was written by a human with a purpose, not someone trying to avoid spam filters. You can easily write your message without lots of sales talk that will attract the spam filter. If you try too hard to avoid certain sales words like ?deals? or ?free,? the mailing will likely irritate the recipient and get nabbed by spam filters anyway.

You should always have permission before sending out unsolicited emails to people. If you avoid doing this, most people will not even read your emails. Your email provider may even decide to drop you, should they get a lot of complaints about your ?spam mail.?

TIP! Do not ever send emails to your customers more than one time per week. Your customers, like you, have busy lives and probably receive many emails each day.

Understand that the ultimate goal of an email marketing campaign is to generate more sales. What you want is for every email to entice the reader to buy. Do this by creating emails that offer product information ? new and old ? as well as information on special discounts.

Use A/B testing to test out different combinations in your subject line. Take one of your emails, and divide the mailing list in two. Send each half of the list the same mail, but with differing subject lines. Doing so will help you determine which type of subject line helps get your emails opened, and which kind will get them deleted.

In your email promoting campaign, try to give each message a personal tone. The recipients are far more likely to respond positively to an e-mail that isn?t overly formal and distant. Try to send emails from recognizable figures within your company, like the CEO or President.

Take note of your competition and how they run their email marketing efforts. Sign up for their email list. This will help you to see, from the consumer point of view, how different strategies come across. You should look for ways to bolster the parts of your campaign that aren?t running as smooth. Try to develop a better promotion than they are offering.

TIP! Allow people who visit your website to subscribe in a variety of different ways, but don?t ever pressure them to sign up. Give your customers the peace of mind of knowing that you will keep all of their personal data, including email address, private while providing them with lots of great information in your newsletter.

If you?re trying to discover an excellent tip for assisting you in your strategy for marketing with email, you should consider using SMS messages to complement your emails. Combining these two mediums makes it easier to provide your customers with all the information they need to understand and take advantage of your offers. Text messaging can also increase brand awareness.

Do not ever send unsolicited emails to unsuspecting customers. Your emails may be marked as spam by people who are not interested in receiving them. Not only is this bad for your reputation, but some ISPs might block your IP address if too many people complain that you are sending unsolicited marketing messages.

Implement a double-confirm option for those who sign up for your emails. Many people type in their email address quickly and make a typo without realizing it. Getting them to write it twice helps cut down on missed opportunities due to typos.

You may want to try sending emails with no images. Images can definitely enhance your copy, but they can take a while to load if the recipient is on dial-up, and many people disable images in email for security reasons. Remember that there are different internet speeds as well as types of computers and mobile devices. Focus more on improving the content of your messages. The smaller and simpler you keep your emails, the wider your potential audience.

TIP! Always get permission before sending emails to anyone. Increasing your email list with people who haven?t directly subscribed through your website can be bad for both the client as well as your business.

Take advantage of holiday spending to develop promotions during these peak retail times. Consider upcoming holidays far in advance and prepare your marketing via email campaigns to take advantage of them. Make sure you send out emails for holidays like Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Valentines Day. Make sure you keep some interesting content to generate sales in between holidays.

The subject line in your email should catch the attention of customers. An enticing or catchy subject line, increases your chances it a potential customer reading the actual email. An email with a suspicious or lackluster subject line will get trashed without it being opened.

When you are following up with customers, you should try to send out a follow-up email with a message to remind them about your products. Include an invitation for them to browse your website. The conclusion of the email can claim that your product or service is guaranteed to be effective for up to 30 days or their money will be returned to them.

Your marketing emails should contain rich content to complement the request for business. Present special articles or information that is unique to the email and not your site. Also give your valued subscribers some exclusive offers only available for people on your mailing list. Avoid sending emails only when you want sales, and be sure to send emails on holidays.

TIP! Be sure your email has been proofread multiple times before they are sent. This may seem obvious, but it is easy to get caught up in the informality of emailing.

The best way to avoid sending emails that are spammy is by studying spam emails firsthand. Get a free email address, post your new email address in various places on the Internet, and it won?t be long before your inbox is jammed with spam. Learn what these emails do wrong and adjust your emails accordingly. You need to be different than the spammers!

Give your readers the ability to share the content of your email easily, including through social media. Your customers will share your information with others, allowing your email list to expand.

Do not limit your emails to a sales pitch. Your mailings should aim to be a newsletter providing important bits of information about the industry or business itself. If your messages are only hard sales, your clientele will grow dissatisfied and unsubscribe from your list in droves. Although the main point of your newsletter may be to sell something, most customers will need more than an average pitch to remain interested and want to read the entire message.

TIP! Use consistency in your message. Always use the same company logo and colors in your email.

People should be able to opt out from your mailing list easily. Although less expensive than other forms of communication, email messages have a price tag. Bad publicity and people seeing you as a hostile spammer can not only negatively influence your business, but may result in being blocked and blacklisted online.

Many businesses are chomping at the bit to take advantage of marketing with email methods, but the pathway to success is not always completely clear. Internet marketing is one of the bust ways to achieve a successful business. The tips above can help your business create an marketing via email strategy that is successful

Telephone Tips that Will Help Generate Business

The influence that social media and the advancement of technology has had in recent years has meant that the traditional methods of communication are steadily becoming obsolete, particularly in business. The telephone has long been the most popular tool for communicating in the business world, allowing easy access to clients, customers, other businesses and employees.

Its effectiveness and versatility shows that there is still a place for the humble telephone within any business. They are the perfect way to communicate either internally or externally and can save time and money. It?s clear to see why they are still widely used within the business world and even within the digital age it?s safe to say there is still plenty life within it yet.

With the correct information and training, you and your business can maximise the opportunities good telephone skills provides and use them to your advantage.

Here are some useful tips to generate business for your brand which proves the telephone remains a vital source of communication.

Staff training

Although emails are predominately used for communication within most businesses, they do allow for review or proofreading before they are sent to the recipient, meaning that any errors within it can be addressed and dealt with. Telephone calls however allow very little room for error, so it?s wise to give staff in depth training. Poor communication skills could have a serious effect on the business. Telephone calls?aren?t?always pleasant affairs and within any business there is the possibility of conflicts. This could be disgruntled customers, impatient clients or simply an internal issue, so it?s best to be able to deal with any problem professionally and efficiently. Always remember that when communicating with anyone outside of the company you are a representative and the way you conduct yourself in the conversation could affect the businesses reputation or perception positively or negatively.

Avoid cold calling and aggressive selling

Cold calling used to be an effective way to boost sales and generate business, sadly, due to the evolution of technology and expansion of communication tools it is increasingly becoming out of date and unsuccessful. Customers are more likely to respond through good customer service and efficiently dealing with their issues and needs, so it?s advised to concentrate on using more modern methods of communication e.g. social media, direct mail, varied media distribution etc.

Customer is priority

They are the most important aspect of any company and without them a business could not function, so good customer service and maintaining relationships is vital. Vocal communication is important as many clients or customers find emailing to be too impersonal, so perfecting telephone manner and etiquette is paramount. It?s a great method of creating strong relationships and dealing with problems. It is also the perfect opportunity to create a division of your business that purposely deals with telephone calls and customer services. These employees can be specially trained to deal with a whole range of issues, leaving other areas of the business to deal with their specific jobs.

Taking into consideration these useful tips can significantly benefit your business in a whole variety of ways. Here some great benefits your business can acquire by using affective telephone communicating skills.

Easy internal communication

This is most effective within a large business situation and allows for good communication maintenance. Employees can communicate with each other throughout the working day in an efficient and simple way.? Regardless of the size of the location, an employee in one department can liaise with a colleague somewhere else in the business without leaving their desk, meaning more time can be spent on work.

Advanced features and link up systems

Technology has advanced within telephone communications so businesses can use them to their advantage. Many systems now allow for link up with mobile phones, email or even fax or pager, so clients, customers and employees can be contacted and dealt with regardless of where they are. They can be modified to provide bespoke settings for any company.

Low costs

Telephone communication can be very expensive, especially within a business situation. A large business may deal with thousands of calls a day, meaning tariffs will be high. To combat this it is possible to negotiate with a provider and set a monthly tariff, cementing the monthly cost to suit the business. If you were to pay for each month depending on communication rates rather than a set bill it could be very expensive.

Easy to expand

Every business uses telephone communications, regardless of the size. The beauty of using telephones is that if the business were to expand, it would be very straightforward to increase the amount of telephones as a company-wide system would be easy to install. It would also be possible to incorporate a bigger telephone system to suit your businesses specific needs.
